H1 heading

The primary heading on a page, typically the page's main title — both an on-page SEO signal and an accessibility landmark.

Definition

In long form.

Each page should have exactly one H1, used for the page's main topic. After H1, headings should descend in order (H2, H3, etc.) without skipping levels. The H1 doubles as the screen-reader landmark for the page's main content area, which is why it's an accessibility concern as well as an SEO concern. Modern Google can read multiple H1s without penalty, but a single clear H1 still ranks better and is more accessible.

In context

When auditing a site, we look for two failure patterns: pages with no H1 (often because the logo is in an H1, leaving the actual content unlabeled), and pages with five H1s (often because the developer used H1 as a styling shortcut).
