The Helpful Content System is integrated into the core ranking algorithm as of March 2024. It evaluates content quality at the site level — a site with a high proportion of low-quality content sees all its content demoted, even the genuinely helpful pages. Targets: thin AI-generated content, keyword-stuffed pages, content that doesn't match the stated topic, mass-produced affiliate content, and content that adds no value beyond existing top results.
Recovery from a Helpful Content demotion isn't fast — Google reassesses sites over weeks or months. The fix is structural: cull or rewrite low-quality content, demonstrate first-hand expertise, focus on genuine user need.
