Joomla

Open-source PHP content management system with strong multilingual support and access control — common in association, education, and nonprofit deployments.

Definition

In long form.

Joomla is an open-source CMS that emerged from the Mambo project in 2005. Compared to WordPress, Joomla offers built-in multilingual support without plugins, more granular user access control, and stronger native menu and taxonomy structures. It runs on PHP with MySQL/MariaDB. Adoption is smaller than WordPress globally but has retained a dedicated following in associations, education institutions, and European public-sector deployments.

In context

Joomla shows up in Nessim Works' inherited-site engagements — when a client is on Joomla and the right move is in-place maintenance, modernization, or content migration rather than replatforming. We work on Joomla without insisting on a WordPress migration when the existing system is actually working.
