sitemap.xml

An XML file listing the URLs a site wants indexed, plus optional metadata about update frequency and priority.

Definition

In long form.

An XML sitemap helps search engines discover pages they might miss through link-following alone — useful for new sites, deep content, or pages without strong internal links. Modern sitemaps include lastmod (last modified date) which Google uses as a freshness signal. Sitemaps can be split into multiple files for large sites and indexed via a sitemap-index.xml. Submission is via Google Search Console; the sitemap URL is also referenced in robots.txt.

In context

Next.js generates a dynamic sitemap from the file router. We always verify the sitemap is correctly listing all canonical pages, includes lastmod from real publish dates, and is submitted to GSC after launch.
